Wartime does produce some amazing innovations... watching through the clip you do notice the snatch launch was for recovering gliders from the forward landing zones.
Luckily for the "Giant C-47 transports" so tasked, there were not too many gliders that actually survived any landing!

Reminds me of some of the first attempts at airborne refuelling - see the end of this clip

It is amazing how quickly balmy ideas turned into practical with thirty years .. another few year after your ripping along in a X-15 at Mach 6.33- 4,250 mph then a few again the SR-71 doing regular 2, 180 mph as a refuelled sustained .. a quick jump such a sort time.
