Gotta say... those shots from DCS are certainly pretty.
Maybe that's what my hot new rig is pining for: a little war and destruction.

So a C-130J , Maybe keep the C-130 on the service, we have the experience staff, ground crew, pilots like them ... then they do have everything required plus more as a Long/short/medium in-expensive transport .. if ya need to transport NH-90s .. throw em on to the 'FRIGATE' typical media, HMNZS Canterbury is a Littoral Class warship ... CRIKEY ! ... back to the 'J' .. Joystick ;)

Love the look of the J model....
I think the RNZAF should go J models to replace the H's, some C-27Js to finally properly replace the Andovers, and a couple of C-17s so we can actually transport NH-90s and LAVs around the world.
The C-27Js are pretty cool, they share the Engines, Props and flightdeck of the C-130J so crews are pretty much qualified to fly both easily and the Spartan also can be flown into smaller strips that the 130 cant be. A prime use would be in the Pacific where there are islands with strips a Herc can't get in and out of, which in times of disaster would be handy for relief efforts.

The other thing i have been thinking about is the replacement for the P-3K2.. The P-8 is extremely expensive and designed as a sub hunter, the Japanese are bringing the Kawasaki P-1 online and that looks pretty neat, designed from the outset for Maritime Patrol and not a converted airliner, had better endurance and a larger internal weapons bay than the P-8....

...and costs more than a P8. Where will you get the c-17s from? They are out of production.

C-130's are ideal , lower mid range , again the C-130 is capable there, if money is the big thing ... just least the C-17 from OZ .. , the maritime role tho , the P-3 is going to be an interesting one to replace , wont see the Kawasaki P-1 tho would like to, and the P-8 , if the P-3 has lasted nearly 50 years , RNZAF are going to want to look at something that has regular component/spear parts .. puts the Boeing in a good position, lighten the tactical strike, the same they did the P-3 making it cheaper, Just Don't get Ron Marks on the buying board ... him and his LAV's

We will go to the aviation boneyard of the world, all those years of design and development .. , started in the early 1970's , it will be interesting to see the US of A comes up with next.

Im sure the P-1 will drop in price, especially if some of the possible sales go ahead.. i do believe the brits were considering them to replace the nimrods at one point.
C-17s, im sure the USAF will start sending some of the very early ones to the boneyard soon enough, and it will be like the F-16s, take the best of the boneyard and bring up to current standards

I think with all the speculation and ideas the aeroplane nutters come and go across the forums, you have to look at the dippy's running the country, one thing I can say is, the HMNZS Canterbury and the NH-90's have proved there worth in a short time .... C-130 that is going to be probably not so hard to replace, 'hells' as I pointed out they still build them .. almost time the DC-3 takes a backseat and relax and open the door to the longest current production aircraft used world wide as a transport with it abilities..... well maybe started from 1950 , first flight 1954 .. August 23 .. thing that dose not amaze is they still keep going , old saying to replace a Dak with a Dak ... think the Herc is now replaced that deal.
