Air New Zealand Almanac

Postby Aviator 1 » Mon Mar 06, 2017 9:41 am

I was talking to someone yesterday and he said he had a Air New Zealand Almanac, I know that Almanacs I have seen either predict the weather for the year for each day and also astro ones which give you indication where the stars will be, comets ect. Never seen one by Air New Zealand is it do with a flight time table or something along those lines ?

I'd be very surprised if these were even used today with a major airline, every flight is sorta planned around the weather , using Astro Nav checks would died in the forties and fifties across land , but would have been used on the Trans Tasman flights with the flying boats.

Aircraft carrying navigators would have followed up on astro/weather/atmospheric/ point location and even tides, all related to getting to the destination , that is what made those guys really up in the bright class, I did have a flight in a DC-3 in the jump seat and watched the pilot Alister Johnson was reading the clouds , he said to Dave the co-pilot "turn that and we go that way" he was good at it .. old school stuff.

That is certainly dating back now. I still don't really understand what the Almanac was for in 1989 Air New Zealand were flying Jets back then the 747 and so on. They were released to the public
as well not just pilots.

Strange sort of book title, 'Air New Zealand Almanac' , wonder if it was a tourist weather guide or another money angle.

Lindy it would be interesting to see what these have to offer, I lent a couple of books to a neighbour, one happen to be the '75th ANZ' book, the thing Jeff said to me comparing the difference between the other, 'With Great Foresight' consider that so well put together and more informative, the really weird thing I see him every weekend or times I'm taking my artwork to print, he's always in the garden and that is an impressive site .. real flower power but to find out he's is also a mild mannered plane nutter .. surprised me B-)

Don't have a late start overnight in Wellington for a couple of weeks, as this has got me intreagued and I would head down to the libraries to see what it is.

Possibly Steve might know?

I actually got the copy and was how bulk it was. To find out it has nothing to do with Air New Zealand or aviation. If I wanted to know how much power was consumed in 1989 or what is the longest bridge
in new Zealand, or how much the road tax was in 1989 its all there. I must admit it was $5.00 spent but has some good facts and figures of New Zealand if your into that type of thing
