Newbie joining world for flight sim!

Postby MrJohn » Fri Mar 24, 2017 7:32 am

Hi all, I am probably 50 years past the optimum age for joining the flight sim fraternity but that does not stop me from being excited at the prospect!

Our aviation museum at Ashburton may soon acquire an ATR72 simulator and I should get to play with it!!!

Hmmmm, I tried to add an image but it does not show (or not yet), I wonder why?

It's not the one from Mt Cook that was at Cavendish Road?

No, not from Mt Cook, I tried to post a picture but obviously that is something I still have to learn how to do!

It is not a certified training simulator.

Let's have another try at posting a picture...

We will get that sorted easy, no problem there.

:) I think generally the amount of pilots who got lessons alone from their own home PC , Well chatting about that couple days back and it really dose work and it is not certified , it is simply that dynamic today it almost has to be :D

Thanks for the comments... we have a little setup we let the kids (of all ages) play with but I expect we will be keeping the ATR simulator under some sort of control.

I dont know what software or add ons we will have. I did have a little try in it 'flying' from Christchurch to Ashburton but by the time I had taken off and got settled in what I thought was the right direction when I commented 'that looks like the Rakaia river down there' the current owner of the simulator looked at the display and said 'No, I think that's the Rangitata.'

And the photo popped up , that looks working its well , love to spend time down there and build molds and features to add to it, so easy done without any expense , typical card and paper mache from flour and water glue and cured in lacure and paint to really look the part.

I think this is an area were we come into it , the scenery, wondering what Flight Simulator you are using and a fingers crossed it is FSX .

MrIan, we are always looking for new members with useful skills! As you can see the panel and the throttle pedestal, rudder pedals, yoke etc (not in the picture) are professionally made by Ruscool of Christchurch but we will have to enclose this in some sort of box to keep the ambient light of the hangar out of the simulator.

John , Truly I love to get back down there, only an hour away from here, the idea to cut out templates and build the cockpit into something extra would be a lot of fun .. bolt that together with a good engineering experience background with a smudge of artwork and your cooking.

I found today that the simulator is presently running FS9 but as we will be providing new computer hardware we might end up with something later.

I presume there is some configuration files that define the interface between the real world of yoke, pedals, throttles, switches etc etc and the flight simulator software?

Those files would be coming with the simulator but would they be different for different versions of Flight Simulator?

You would find much of these are very much default setting and plug in and play regard to the yoke, throttle and rudder pedals , you do have other set-up if own a auto-pilot .. radio setup.

John says the software on the simulator is ISTD_ATR72-500 which I know nothing at all about so I expect there is some serious learning to be done.

You maybe surprised and get a veteran simmer in there and would probably be cooking in 30 minutes.
