Its been many, many years since the Earth moved for me, Marty!.... ....!

Been there, done the job a few times, 5 Children..... ...!

Quieter, more peaceful times now, in solitude, and I'm quite happy doing my own housework!

I don't know about "Earthquakes"? We don't seem to get them up here.... ;) ....!

England is made out of a more solid rock....Granite, and Old Red Sandstone..... ...!

Paul....Sing:..."...quaking all over!"..... :D ...!

Tremors are quite common and occasionally, they get over-ambitious and qualify as quakes. The little village of Comrie, about 15 miles west of Perth where I used to live, was right on the Highland Fault and the locals got their crockery rattled every day or two. That is a good situation, because it is slipping all the time, not sticking and building up to a huge double whammy.
I had my biggest scare ever in 1987. Daughter and I were visiting the Scottish family and we were out for a drive in a favourite area. Caught up to a semi-trailer, which was doing well but just slow enough to be a nuisance. I remembered the road from before I emigrated in 1968, so I just sat back and waited for an overtaking opportunity which I knew would appear soon.. It did, it was clear, so I went for it. Halfway along this big curtain-sided truck there was a crash and a roar and something flashed in front of me about 50' AGL. One of those situations where you fly the plane - we got past, the truck had not fallen on me, the car was still fully functional, and at this point young bro in the back seat informed me that this was one of the terrain-following training areas for RAF Jaguars :o
They didn't have them in my day.

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

Mike , next time your here , come and stay with me .... we may be able to treat you to a small shake or two....or stay with Doug , hes had his fair share.
Anything under 4.5 is open to a house bet (how big was that etc) but when you cant stand up, and can hear stuff falling, breaking , and the lights go out(if at night) its a bit different.
We here in NZCH are hard wired to these bloody things ...ok , its going to be a 4. whatever ...but those initial few seconds go right back to the 7.2 in September whenever ... and then the killer one in February ...is it going to stop? will it get bigger?

Even now ...almost 8 years after the fact , the sound of the rubbish truck dropping the bin makes me jump ...and no doubt thousands of others here.
Its not a case of "get over it" NO BODY here will ever get over it .
Sorry, maybe a bit of stress venting in the wrong place .

I can imagine in the future the magma being turned off and there no longer ever being earthquakes. ;)

There is a difference between an earthquake and a nuclear bomb underground explosions seismic foot print hence the question to the Prime minister Jacinder Ardern by the President of Philippines. :ph43r: :D Some things one cannot hide lol not that our Parliament would ever know.

Great link, thanks Doug! i'd love to see a time animation of all that, seems to be grinding and bumping along quite merrily. We don't seem to be in line for any of that in Auckland, I guess our volcanoes will get us in the end...

Looking at Doug's map, there's a a bit of ongoing action on that SE/NE axis alright.

Moderate earthquake (9 hours ago)
Sun Jul 22 2018 3:14 PM
Magnitude: 5.2
Depth: 73 km
20 km east of Nelson

Quite an unusual type of quake there was what sounded like a thud of a car or something running into a wooden fence then about 3 seconds later came the rumble and a couple of moderate jolts the jolts were all over in less than a couple of seconds no big shaking rocking or rolling.
