Flying around BC

Postby chopper_nut » Fri Dec 14, 2018 11:38 am

So I ended up flying from McMillan Fisheries camp to Bella Coola (CYBD) the other day... I wanted to do some fishing... The weather wasn't good enough to get up high and go over the top so I took the long way around. To Port Hardy (CYZT) first and then to Campbell River (CYBL) for the night.
No pics of Port Hardy, I was preoccupied landing in a fairly gusty wind...

Arrived at the helicopter and yep, it looks like rain

All fired up ready to go

Climbing and heading for the coast

Looking back towards the town

Good decision not to plan to go over the top

A few gaps in the cloud letting the sun through

It's still VFR....

Weather got better on the last leg

The 407 is pretty...

Finished for the day.

I guess if I'd really wanted to, I could've gone over the top but if the engine had quit, it would've been a bit interesting descending through the clouds... and it wouldn't have been anywhere near as pretty.

Next flight is back to Quatam River and back to work.

Looks like you had a great time over there. Was the virtual fishing any good?

Nick, you should make some Real vs Sim shots, you are in a unique position for it.

Unfortunately, there isn't any really good PNG scenery at the moment but if ORBX port theirs over, I'll be all over it like a tropical disease. There may be, in the distant future a good BO105 on the way too so we'll see.

It really is... Version 11 has really upped the game. .30 is coming soon which has a lot of new stuff including a new particle system which will fix the contrails for the tube liner guys, Active Sky is available for XP now which looks AMAZING, companies like ORBX and Propstrike are starting to produce excellent scenery and the freeware community is blowing up at the moment. XP is THE sim for the future... at least until FS2 gets fleshed out some more. It's great having sims to choose from.

Bell 412 around Bell Coola (CYBD) early morning. XP 11.3 looking amazing now that the updates have settled down... The lights are really looking realistic now.

Carenado's old 185 is still going strong, with a couple of minor mods, in XP11. Bella Bella (CBBC) to a small strip that I can't even remember the name of...

Just some from yesterdays flight. The 185 really is a fun machine to get around in. It's a bit dated in areas and the ground handling requires a bit of patience combined with differential braking but it's very rewarding.

I know, I know, I'm not in the middle of the runway....

Approaching Bella Coola. Loving the cloud shadows on the scenery. XP11 really does look better than P3D in my opinion.

What I found is that rounding out in one of these, far more than a Super Cub, you have to have power on otherwise the elevators are completely useless... I've got an engineer inspecting the gear for damage now... <_<

 Yes, those big fat tyres wouldn't exactly smooth the airflow to the elevators . Great pics Nick.

I think it might be a 185 thing. Big wing and with the flaps down, it'll probably spoil the airflow over the elevators.
