P3Dv5 - an expensive fix

Postby Adamski » Fri May 01, 2020 12:02 am

It took a major chunk out of my super, but I ended up having to upgrade my trusty OLD GTX970 for an 8GB RTX2060. Ouch!!! I blame the lockdown blues for that!

I can see now that, with the 970, there were basically so many things tthat weren't working with P3Dv5 - probably a combination of lack of VRAM and incomplete DX12 functionality. Anyway ... here goes!

All of these were taken with the beta atmospheric mode enabled. Some nice and subtle lighting effects, but also some oddities (fringeing and rather odd luminance adaptation).

No textures or clouds as yet - and no shader mods.

Wow really nice shots. I am sure with a bit of your renowned tinkering you will have it ironed out perfectly.

Nice. Let us keep informed about the evolution of P3DV5 please. At the moment I don't have the nerve to put a new sim into operation and I'm afraid updating all my addons could be a costly affair. More interested in VFR flying than in the thick ships, I'm waiting for Microsoft's FS2020, which I hope will be more than just a further development of the P3D, but if Microsoft falls bombastically on its nose and the whole thing turns into a floppy, it's nice to have a functioning alternative. But until that decision is made I will stay at V4 as I said before.

The difficulty is that I don't have the ability to directly compare v5 and v4.5 on the same system - as I didn't have the room to have both. The new card only went in *after* v4.5 was removed, so I never got to see what improvements it would have made - both in terms of visuals and performance.

The addons thing has always been a problem. Ironically, the longer (and more stable) the platform is, the more addons you acquire - and so the move to the next sim becomes increasingly more painful. I don't think I mind re-buying the same aircraft for a totally different sim (I've added some of my favourite P3D aircraft to XP11) but I really resent having to fork out again on upgrades to the same sim - with some companies not even prepared to do discounts.

I have an embarrassing spreadsheet that contains all my acquisitions - including cost. The shocker is when you add the SUM field!!!  . I keep telling myself I should treat each addon as if it were a good restaurant meal or concert ... to be enjoyed at the time. That we get hours of fun frequently using that addon for months softens the blow a little! I suppose the same logic applies to hardware (and cars etc.). My old GTX970 really has seen better days, but I have to admit that it's had a good life!

Yes I feel this pain. All my addons from the last 10 years or so are a better car...

Adam,

Don't these belong in the photo section?

Seriously though if I didn't know they where from P3dv5 I would have thought you'd been air to air in most of them.

How are you finding the 2060 Super though, and what settings can you comfortably run the sim at?

Early days yet ... and I see HF1 is just out, so [yet] another install shortly!! My general philosophy is to start off with most things maxed out - just to see how good things *can* look (and blow the frame rate) ... then gradually tweak things back until I find things vaguely flyable.

I'll post my settings after I given HF1 a thorough rogering ;)

Adam ...great shots, I really love 1 and 6 ..... I know you're still tweaking ..but...to me these all seem "milky" or something like watercolor paintings. Everything is defined, but I can't explain the definition ....if that makes sense.
Maybe "No textures or clouds as yet - and no shader mods." explains it. Tweak away ...my justification for a major upgrade to run this depends entirely on your results :)....no pressure but at the moment ...no sale bra guy.

Mixed reviews on the Hotfix. Might pay to hold off for a few days. It is essentially a complete reinstall.

Well ... the hotfix did cure a few issues on my system ... but the weird lighting model is driving me crazy. The landscape (and/or aircraft) just gets either bleached out or way too dark depending on the camera viewpoint. It's abysmal.

Do you think they’re trying to do the simulating an iris?

Does turning off HDR help?

Thanks - the main culprit in the HDR settings is *Bloom*- which I always set to zero. I've restarted with a clean prepar3d.cfg and so far I think it looks a bit better (!!).

I'm never that keen on sims mimicking "camera" effects (lens flare and all that stuff) ... I just want to see what the *eye* sees - not some cheesy "what if" artificial filter/effect! I can do all that in Photoshop, if I ever felt the need (which I won't, LOL!).
