Spitpin,

Thanks for your kind words. It amazes me and I never knew that DC-8-40 series was first to cruise at 50,000 ft and soar at supersonic speed!!

I don't think that it carried a full payload for that flight, it carried the equivalent of a normal load. It was a bit of a marketing gimmick much like Tex Johnson rolling the 707. The Convair 990 was faster on a normal day as was the 727. Still interesting though. But I challenge the assertion that it's the most historic feat in the history of aviation...

" I challenge the assertion that it's the most historic feat in the history of aviation." do tell young Nick.
But I do agree with your previous statement, the operative word being " equivalent" ...relating to that document.

Well if we're talking commercial aviation then surely the entry into service of the DH Comet is far more historic. More generally, the first solo crossing of the Atlantic surely ranks much higher than Douglas' marketing stunt???

Chopper Nut,

Thank you for viewing my screenshots. When I said full payload, I mean that Douglas company filled the plane with full luggage load using real luggages and full passenger load using 150 lb dummies.

It is historic feat because it was first passenger commercial airline plane to go supersonic and it was first to cruise at 50,000 ft.
