Doctor who...an encounter with the future.

Doctor who ...a time lord, remember him in his many guises?
Yesterday I had a sort of DW moment. I was walking through the main foyer area of work with a contractor and my able assistant....young Bob.
We stopped to discuss the work to be done, and I became aware of a voice .." excuse me, mister" ..repeating. The insistence made me focus a little more, I looked down and there was a micro man, estimated age about 6 or 7.

Now, protocol in this situation is clear, interaction with these types is not encouraged ...but if it can't be avoided, any interaction must take place with at least 4 adults within view, and in range of a cctv camera .....all good there.
I knelt down to make level eye contact, giving me a better chance to detect a possible attack ...and asked ..how can I help.

He tapped my watch and asked .... what's that .... it's my watch I replied, ..whats it for ....It tells me what time it is ..... Does it talk to you? . Now I'm starting to wonder what's going on ....Bob and the contractor have done a runner ...and I see more micro men making a beeline for me.

Why doesn't my phone ring when I need it to ... now there are 4 of these surrounding me ...the questions keep coming ...now my radio is of interest. I try to reply in a way that won't lead to more questions, but it's hopeless .. it's all about my watch....radio...

Finally, Bob calls ....hey, sorry kids, I've got to go now ...there's a .... crocodile in the pool I have to deal with ...hasty exit.


Anyway, I was talking to a teacher later on, and she told me that a lot of kids these days have no idea how to "read" a normal (as in with hands) clock or watch .... and I happened to encounter one who wanted to.
If there is a next time, I'll make time to explain and do my bit for the future ...with 4 adults and camera coverage of course ....ahhhhh ....the future ...I'm worried.

Great little tale BTW. My kid has no idea how to read an analogue clock, I haven't bothered reinforcing it coz none of them learn to and they have their faces in other digital tech all day anyway. Might be more useful to have them look up the sky and estimate time based on the position of the sun for the day when their precious batteries run out

I fondly remember my time in my nursery school days (1934+) when I was taught how to read the time, by the hands on the clock...
...how to tie up my shoe laces...
...and how to draw the letters of the Alphabet...(the lower-case "a" was/is always my favourite..with its fat belly)!

The beauty of analogue devices it that they give you the sense of; "space and distance in time" which digital devices do not...everything is; "instantaneous" in a digital world!.. ....!
...give me my lovely analogue speedometer on my motorcycle every time, over a snazzy digital one!
...and all my watches and clocks always have "hands" on them...
They are devices which always; "come in handy"!

...and I still revel in the Imperial Measurement System!.... ...!
...its 45 degrees Fahrenheit outside at the moment, as I sit three feet from my back door, drinking a pint of something quite nice!

It's nice being an; "Old Fogey"... ...!

From my school days up to 1950; 1971 left me far behind in my world of measurements...
...I've never recovered from it since!
It created chaos in my time as an Electro-Mechanical Engineer!
It's a funny old do but most of my correspondents in the Flight Sim Community, and the Motorcycle Community, are Ex-Pats from England/Great Britain who is/are familiar with our Good Queen Victoria's Inperial Ways... ...!
...after all, we conquered most of the world, and taught them how to speak proper English!... ... ...!
It's always a joy to correspond with folks who remember their historical roots from the past, long ago!
According to my "Fosbery" family roots, I am still in Iron Age times in England!

I am solidly in the Metric Camp, because mostly we have 10 fingers to count with!
It's just... easier.
And bear in mind, Daniel Fahrenheit was a Pomeranian who predated Q. Vic by 100 years so you can have no allegiance to his temperature scale.
One day he arbitrarily stuck his thermometer under his arm and decreed: this shall be 90 degrees!
And water freezes at ... some or other equally arbitrary number, not to mention where it boils.

The only point I will yield on is the Metrication of Time.
The solar system inconsiderately doesn't have base 10 functions.
