So to conclude, I redid last nights awful VR experience with the benefits of all my new knowledge. I used scattered cloud weather and took off from NZQT about 15 mins before sunrise, with a flight plan loaded into the GPS so I had a line for me / the autopilot to follow. Dawn lighting was gorgeous, the sun coming up and lighting up the peaks and then the world as I climbed over the lake was stunning, and the flight over the Alps with the peaks lit up pink and everything below in shadow was amazing. At NZMF I turned north and started slowly bleeding altitude off intending to follow the coast up to Greymouth (it has a decent speedway track, who needs a better excuse to go somewhere?) but as I passed Haast it was getting late and NZGM was still a good hour away so I called it good and landed there.

The flight was breathtaking, and I'm completely sold. Yes MSFS could and eventually will do VR better, and it's one hell of a learning curve, but once you figure out how to work with what's already there it's actually pretty damn good.

There has been an update to the MSFS JF Arrow which has significantly improved the VR experience, the textures at the resolution needed for VR are about double what they were and the VR mouse now works (almost) flawlessly. The parallax issue is solved in 85-90% of the cockpit, and when you mouse over a control now the mouse cursor snaps onto it. You don't realise it but the cursor is actually floating an inch or so in front of the panel so it's really obvious when it snaps down onto a button or knob, it's a seriously nice way to handle it. In the places where the parallax is still a problem the cursor still snaps to the control when you get it in the right place so it's obvious you've got it right and you know exactly what you're going to click on, you just need to do the one eyed squint thing to find the spot. I just did my new favourite test hop (Queenstown to Wanaka) and the difference between the previous version and the latest version is night and day, it is SO good now. I didn't even pause to think about how to hit the alt switch after engine start this time, previously if I tried that with both eyes open I turned the battery off every time. Apparently the Aerosoft CRJ is just as good if not better and the mouse zoom works, I'm really looking forward to trying that out when I get home tonight ! Have found a VR app that will let me have a pdf open in a floating window like an extra tablet that I can throw around and drop anywhere I want once I figure out how it works so that solves the checklist problem.

Things are looking really good, I think my biggest problem now is that when I'm holding anything (like a vr controller) I keep trying to put it down on the empty seat next to me
