The longest ATR flight ?

Postby Splitpin » Sun May 16, 2021 6:47 pm

As per the title ...what would it be, starting in CHC.
I need to fly, just for a day but not on a jet...I've done Dunedin to AKL on an A-320, ...the highlight of that day was the ATR from chc south.
As far as I can see it's chc to Tauranga... and I want to return the same day.

Are you referring to real life or flight simming, please?

My guess is that unless somebody tells me I am wrong, the longest ATR flight by Air New Zealand would be from AUK to YSNF Norfolk Island airport. Either in real life or flight simming, you can catch ATR from NZCH to NZAA and from NZAA to YSNF. That would be long ATR flight with one stop.

Am I correct??

Yeah Christchurch to Tauranga would be it although I'm not sure about the timing of the return flight.

Hey Marty yes Tauranga to Christchurch is the longest on an ATR, Wellington to Invercargill is longer but that is always done with the Dash 8

As per the Topic title and as to where this Topic has been posted in the Non Flightsim Related section of the Forum location being refered to as the New Zealand Aviation ie real life Aviation related topics.

Unfortunately you are incorrect on all accounts in relation to the ATR New Zealand operations.

Air Chatham's flies the only direct flight from New Zealand, from Auckland NZAA to Norfolk Island YSNF and return every Friday. It is an International flight requiring a passport and the airline departs from the Auckland International Airport Terminal. Air Chatham's will be using a Saab 340 on the Norfolk Island route. Even though Air Chatham's purchased an ATR 72-500 in early 2019 to undertake scheduled tours in New Zealand for Tauck Tours. It's more economical initially to use the Saab 340 over the ATR 72-500 while resuming post Covid Trans Tasman International flights. Air Chatham's Norfolk Island Flights resume on May 27th and from August, they will be operating two return services a week.

I believe that the Air Chatham's ATR 72-500 is only going to be used for Charter Flights. This leaves Air New Zealand operating their regional domestic services using the ATR 72-600 making their direct Christchurch to Tauranga service route, the longest of an internal domestic flight, using a ATR 72-600 within New Zealand.

Hey Marty,

Unfortunately it looks like a Christchurch to Tauranga Flight on Grabaseat
It's not a same day return, it'll be an Over-nighter with a likely Chch based ATR crew layover stay in Tauranga.

Cheapest Days in June @ $92 departing NZCH

Wednesday 9th June Returns NZTG Thursday 10th June
Tuesday 15th June Returns NZTG Wednesday 16th June
Monday 21st June Returns NZTG Tuesday 22nd June

It's $69 on Thursday 24 June Returns NZTG Friday 25 June

Thanks for the info Radar  I thought that may have been the case.
Thanks to you other chaps for the comments ..... thinking about that Wellington -Invercargill run as well, love the Dash's.

The last time I did this I went from CHC to Dunedin, Dunedin to AKL , AKL to Welly, welly to CHC in a day ...I had Palmy north in there as well but some real nasty weather cancelled that sector.

Why would you want to do a long ATR sector? I try to avoid the damn things as much as I can. Going from Lae to Rabaul on one is painful... The missus and I flew from Auckland to Nelson on one once and we could barely talk to each other the whole flight it was so loud. No such problems on the Dash.

Nick, I just love the turboprops....my ride of choice is the Dash ...nice big windows and not crowded, but the ATR has for me anyway ...a certain something. Noise doesn't worry me, being a Bristol freighter and Herc traveller from way back.

The same reason I like to travel from Glasgow to Motherwell via Dumfries and Carlisle (173 miles) instead of by the direct suburban train (11 miles) :D

I find the ATR to be horrifically uncomfortable as well as the noise... I don't mind noise (I flew the 500 for five years...) but the prop noise on the ATR is terrible. Just me I guess, I'll go for a Dash if I can any day.

Well I'm kind of with you on that one Mike, I'd quite like to do that run too. My old man is building the Settle to Carlisle run for his model railway...

Oh, don't mention trains...Tranz Alpine is great. Is the overnight from AKL to wellington still going? I did that 30 years or so ago and it was magic.

Your Dad must have a huge playroom  I've been over Ais Gill many a time, as well as Shap and of course Beattock too. These days, the electrics go up about 50% faster than the steam hauled trains used to come down. The S&C isn't electrified yet, but the latest diesels go up there at a pretty fair clip, too.

I've done the Invercargill to Wellington flight on the Q300 a few times for work - as big of an aviation geek as I am, that is pure misery. Two hours of noise and minimal seating room.

Ok I’ll bite here,

Longest currently on the ATR is CHC-TRG. There has been talk of the it doing more IVC-WLG runs, but who knows.

Also I do think the Dash is louder, but that’s a personal opinion. And also the overhead bins are bigger on the ATR :P

Same - the seats in the ATR are bloody awful. Not hard, but an odd back angle.

When I did the full trip Auckland to Greymouth it was all daylight apart from some late arrivals as you will know it was dark when we reached Christchurch.
The rail journeys are not running full time now as they were when I did the trip those days it was every second day from Auckland returning the the following day the Coastal Pacific had just started again after the Kaikoura earth quack and was running everyday summer and closed down during the winter and the TranzAlpine wad running daily.
The Northern Explorer only runs three days a week from Auckland Monday, Thursday and Saturday Wellington to Auckland Wednesdays, Friday and Sunday.
Coastal Pacific Saturday and Sundays TranzAlpine Thursday and Friday

And???????????? You are incorrect about your statement above. It is NOT uncommon that this New Zealand Aviation subforum is used often by forum members asking about facts on real life present or real life historic flights of New Zealand aviation SO THAT they can recreate such same flights via flight simming.

That is why I was asking Splitpin if he is asking questions about taking real life flights OR he is asking questions about facts on real life flights on ATR so that he can recreate such flights on flight sim.

Radar88 wrote:Unfortunately you are incorrect on all accounts in relation to the ATR New Zealand operations.

Air Chatham's flies the only direct flight from New Zealand, from Auckland NZAA to Norfolk Island YSNF and return every Friday. Air Chatham's will be using a Saab 340 on the Norfolk Island route.

That is very strange. I seem to remember 2 years ago or so that Air New Zealand had ATR flights from NZAA to YSNF?? Can anybody verify on this please??
