MSFS 2020 Real vs Sim

Postby Charl » Wed Mar 15, 2023 9:47 pm

I've always had a Thing for trying to replicate the real world in my flight simulator.
MSFS 2020 has attributes that may make this more convincing.
R vs S doesn't always produce the nicest screenshot - often it's a snapshot peculiar to an area that may be challenging to reproduce, or just mildly interesting.
Feel free to post yours here, too.

Here's a quickie set from an NZAA departure:

The airside furniture is pretty good, but there are issues with ground handling equipment.

Atmospherics are going to be good in this sim.

Amazing ... I've been screening all day, so my brain is tuned to it...when I started looking at your post, my sim brain didn't like the real clouds, processing them as sim.

Most excellent work Sir.

Thanks for the comments, chaps.
Yeah! Those popcorn clouds!
Our brains also think this is what a fish looks like

Also...what's great about a good sim is you can get views that you really would not be able to, as a civilian:

interesting to see that those lugs on the wings are much smaller in reality...

nice comparisons, although that's not a fish, but a bible belt bumper sticker

Yes it's just the stock MSFS A320, there are deficiencies especially in the moveable surfaces of the wing.
Although I'm not enough of a tubeliner fan to fork out >NZD100 for a better one.
(Does anyone know if the ground equipment is part of the model?)
Incidentally I am told that those lugs are for tying on the guide rope during overwing evacuation!

JK, ask any kindergarten kid to draw a fish, that's what you'll get

Next up: Queenstown NZQN.

Have to say, the airstair and tow tractor ruin this scenery for me. I thought I had bought a replacement pack for these, but no show  other than a white generic tractor from time to time.

Image

The images also suffer serious degradation starting with me shoehorning them into composites, through Postimage and then finally the forum software!
No wonder the sim often looks better...

Exhuming an old thread:

And since I'm there: the shot back to Akaroa, from where you start walking that somewhat steep trail!

Looking nice. Funnily enough, I've been flying in this very area today in P3Dv6, trying to reproduce a CTD for a user. (Maybe the final support query before I close up for good:)
Although I can get this part of the world to look ok at dawn/dusk, it just won't look anywhere near as realistic as MSFS most of the time. P3Dv6 is the best P3D yet, but it still lags soooo far behind MSFS for graphics.

Yup. And I suspect MSFS2024 will attempt to close the RW systems gap that might make the older sim more attractive in some ways.

MSFS 2020 Real vs Sim

Postby Charl » Thu Jul 03, 2025 11:42 am

Been travelling...
I always get the best available scenery for places I intend to visit, and fly the area ahead of time.
Not only does this help with orienting yourself in a strange place, it saves $$$ on the local Scenic Flights :)

Not much into flightsimming right now, it will no doubt come back in due course.
But thought I'd drop this one in, for interest.
It was actually done in reverse: the screenshot was taken before departure, and the hotel picked to suit!

Quite busy with Chinooks out of Sembawang when we were there.
Hope you got to the Light Show!
I suspect our paths may have crossed at some point, going West.

Here's another R v S. We got a good view going up the gondola, where I took the pic.
Then the "Table Cloth " settled on Table Mountain.
We had a great lunch, up in the clouds.

Indeed, takes a little while to settle in though.

It's a bit like a Hollywood movie where a Roman legionnaire wears a SEIKO watch. But the idea is right and important. I just had a really scary aha effect on my approach to Palm Springs, RWY 13R in California. The windmills there are a nightmare.

I do these, before and after the RW event, as an extension of the photography, and perhaps to increase situational awareness.
