Dornier Do Y Wal

Not much is left of Dornier. But constructions by Claude Dornier proved themselves between the world wars. One of the well-known aircraft was the Dornier Wal, whose concept was still frequently used and copied until after the 2nd World War. The whale was also used for many of the pioneering activities of the time. The whale shown here was Roald Amundsen's plane, who wanted to reach the North Pole in 1925 (!) with two machines of this type. I wouldn't blame the plane for going wrong.

You set me off reading about Amundsen, and now I recall they ate the sled dogs on the way back from the South Pole
Tragic that he was lost on a rescue mission rather than a grand exploration.

Yes, Amundsen and his disappearance with another flying boat, a French Latham 47, shows us to this day how risky flying was then compared to today.
