Great shot!!! F-14 Tomcat would be suitable for New Zealand as F-14 Tomcat is essentially patrol plane to cover huge bodies of water which is ideal for New Zealand which has 2 big islands surrounded by waters. F-14's ultra long range Phoenix missiles could hit anything far over water body.

Surprised me that New Zealand and Australia did not think of buying F-14 Tomcats!

Nah, NZs defense budget is far too small to sustain aircraft like that. The A4 was a perfect aeroplane and the F16 would've been the ideal successor. What might've been. A lot of aircrews in the leadup to the purchase of the A4s were lobbying for the F4. As much as I love the Phantom, it would've been a political disaster and they would've lasted long enough for me to see them fly.

Fabulous shot! I've always preferred the F/A-18 over the Tomcat, but that shot really does it justice!

Because it would've been far too expensive to run and maintain.

At the time, they were a nightmare for us here in East Germany, because it was only with the MiG 29 that we had an aircraft that the F-14 couldn't just eat up for breakfast. But the Phoenix air-to-air missile and much better radar made us look old. That only changed when the Soviets introduced the Sukhoi Su 27.
