That's how big that odd-looking airbrake is....

"Last of the Gunfighters"
I can't recall how the models went (Corsair?) but there was one whose entire wing was made to rotate on the main spar to get some lift off the flattop.
An era of American design excesses, I'll see your 25 sq ft. and raise you 100 B-)

That was the F8 Crusader that had the variable incidence wing. Probably more complex and expensive than the F4s extending nose gear and certainly more so than what the Brits did with the Scimitar and Buccaneer where the whole nose was raised up off the deck for launch

Charl ...look at the steel in that car. There must be two Toyotas in the grill alone.....I love it.
Re the F-8 Crusader....I have it in my warthunder hanger...but I just can't bring myself to love it, unlike the A-7.

I almost warm up to it when it looks like this....

But when it does this....

The F-8 was nicknamed The Gunfighter because of the 4 x 20mm cannon. As the F-8 community used to say "When you're out of F-8s, you're out of Gunfighters"
Personally, I don't mind the F-8, but The SLUF or SLUG if you prefer, certainly suits the SEA camouflage and sharks mouth.

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'
