According to the 1940 Air Ministry Spitfire manual, and backed up by the Ultimate Spitfires book, it's a Type P8 Compass as fitted to the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito and Beaufighter.

Ahh yes, the good old P-8...I knew that....not.
