I’ve Been Away: Duxford

Postby Charl » Thu Jun 13, 2024 12:05 pm

Another Bucket List item, having spent quality time at this famous UK airfield in previous flightsims.
(Also there’s a wonderful freeware scenery for MSFS 2020, and plenty of WWII hardware.)

I have always envied the chaps who could just stroll over the road from Cambridge and experience all the (ongoing) stuff at Duxford.
So we bent the travel schedule to fit this in, spending half a day there.
No flying because it rained!

No matter, there is so much to find on the site.

Because the airfield was operational in the Battle of Britain, it has real authority for its exhibits.
One of these is an audiovisual restoration of the ops room as it was on 15th September 1940, “Battle of Britain Day”.

Inside, the comms radios play transcripts of scrambling aircraft at 14:05 on the day.
The sector controller was Group Captain Alfred Basil Woodhall. (And there’s a Kiwi connection – he retired to Dunedin, where he died in 1968.)

They chattily use first names, “Douglas” is Douglas Bader who led a Hurricane Wing out of Duxford.
He famously was a proponent of the Big Wing concept, assembling a large number of fighters in an aggressive formation north of London, to pounce on the Luftwaffe.

You do get a real sense of the times – urgency and tension, yet calmly going about the business.

So glad to have experienced this iconic airbase, so much to do and see, and importantly, a live airfield with all that goes with it.

Thank you Marty.

That B-17 is a popular rental for war movies.
To the point that the nose art is different on each side, depending on the role!

Loved my visit to Duxford. I did get to see one air show there, and another at Biggin Hill. Awesome.
I really wish that we were still flying there. Hard on the body with the time zone/jet lag stuff, but always something to do summer or winter.
My daughter is living there at the moment and she and her partner are really enjoying it, for the same reasons. It was for 2 years but I think that might balloon out to 5 or more. I’m going to visit them in August so I must check out the air show schedule.

30 hours, give or take, through Singapore!

Had to do the outing, as you may have gathered I am part of the Faithful.
I think there are two visits to be made: airshow and a relaxed potter through everything there.
We did the latter, a week before the D-Day 80th display so there was a fair bit going on but no crowds or flying.

Did allow time to dawdle at my mini-bucket list stuff, and I'll post occasionally what I found interesting.
They've almost completed their Victor, now parked in reception at Hall1

That Victor looks marvelous. I really must get back there myself. The last time I was there for Flying Legends, the American 'hangar' hadn't even been started.

Yep, 1996 was the last time I was in the UK. The day before Hoof Proudfoot went in with the P-38. Hopefully I'll change that in the next couple of years. Got a Europe trip in a few months that'll tick off a few things.
