Castle Point

Although I normally run the sim for hours each week, I don't actually fly much. I've always been attracted to the sim because of the way it portrays the world. Anyway, last month we spent a few days at Castle Point, on the east coast of the Wairarapa. As I grew up near the east coast beach in Christchurch, I really miss the sound of the waves, which just isn't the same here in Wellington. Castle Point is a small settlement with a lighthouse and an amazing little enclosed bay, with great surfing at the 'gap'.

My son and I climbed Castle Rock, the big rock in the Google Earth screenshot below. This is rather terrifying as I'm afraid of heights, but I managed it by leaning into the hill and keeping my eyes off the view below. At one point I wondered how the new sim would represent something like this rock, but I forgot to have a look when I had the alpha installed. today I found myself flying over the place, which is actually a point of interest in MSFS, so I dived down for a look. The lighthouse is nicely done, it even cycles through different colours at the base.

I took a few photos of the lighthouse, including this one with my phone. The last shot is my attempt at something similar in the sim.

I'll have to revisit the place when MSFS2024 is released. I also need to get back into photography, I notice I've spent more on photography this month than I have on simming and model railway combined. Well, until MS charge me for my pre-order.

very nice!

They promise the terrain in MFS2024 is way more detailed than 2020, I can't wait!

It's these quiet scenes that make this simulation valuable beyond Boeing and Airbus.
