Real time/weather in FS2024 - Wellington

Postby toprob » Wed Nov 27, 2024 11:24 pm

I didn't plan to record this, it was just a quick flight to relax this evening, but I was impressed how close the sky/weather was to what I saw outside my window here in the Hutt. If I squint, it could be real.
Not an exciting flight, I know, and yes, I'm aware that the stall warning went off on landing, but I am used to more lively weather when landing at NZWN.

By the way, this is Flightbeam's NZWN, an amazingly well-optimised airport which performs great in 2024.

Some things I'd like to see improved, there are no waves here, because the wind is mild, but in reality you'd always get waves in Cook Strait. The screen space reflections in the water are the same as 2020, in that they are not great. I really hope they find a better way to render these reflections, because it does let the sim down.
There don't appear to be any pines available, the native bush is represented somewhat, but nothing like real pine plantations.

I have a fairly low-end PC for 2024, I lower the resolution to 1440p, with high settings, so I only get mid-30s FPS. And although the low FPS are noticeable at times, the whole experience seems smoother than 2020.

That coast always makes a for a great flight down from NZPP.
The YT clip is 720p so hard to make a call on quality - what's your take, back to back with the '20 version?
There's an issue with '20 when in external view the aircraft crosses a coastline - reflections kind of warp around the plane.
Is this still happening?

My Flightsim PC is still at the vet, turns out they;ll "look at" it within 24h, not "fix" in 24h aargh

I did wait until YT had processed the HD before I posted the link, so it should be available at 1080p.

Yes, that warping is the screen space reflections -- the sim can only show reflections of what is actually visible on-screen, so where the coastline is occluded by something -- like the struts -- the reflections just don't appear. It's also weird at the edges of the screen, the reflections just seem to fade in and out.

Your PC troubles really freak me out, I do worry a lot about mine now that I'm retired, as I can no longer have the business pay for it. It would take a big chunk of my savings if I had to replace it. I hope yours is an easy (and cheap) fix.
