01 arrival

Postby simonh » Wed Feb 19, 2025 4:08 pm

I managed to catch a glimpse of the Old Girl while driving up The Runway through Wigram.
Looked bloody marvellous...showing my bias yet again.

Glad you got a glimpse mate.
Had to double check "while driving up The Runway through Wigram " ..... which in the past would have given you a great view :)
The runway now, for those not familiar is basically a bloody shopping mall.
Like the late Ian Warren, I will never forgive that chc city council who sold off all that history...the Birth place of the RNZAF.

anyway, thanks for posting....seem to need the old heart starter thing here(forum) again.
How hard is a thumbs up....

Yes it was sad to see the same thing happen to Hobsonville in Auckland. It’s just tiny apartments now. It’s called progress. I guess it is, but to what end?

OK so there will be a quiet tear shed here and there...But in a sort of The King is Dead, Long Live the King way, the follow up is pretty good indeed, isn't it.

I get it... but the military have always adapted to the operational requirement, things come and things go as the need arises.
And the memories are preserved, you have a lovely museum to browse through yesteryear: not forgotten at all.
Hobsonville had long outlived its purpose which was to service flying boats, and could've been turned into anything including a golf course.

Thanks CP and Charl .
Hobby, back in the day had the best Airman's mess...great food, a great club (bar)
Many a messy night spent there with the resident RNZN team.
Charl, you are right , of course...progress vs emotion is a recipe for trouble.

Charl,

Thanks for link to cool video showing great comparison between C-130H and C-130J. I wish Captain Sim would introduce airline type cockpit for C-130J for FSX!!!! You should have seen AMAZING airline type cockpit panel of C-130 Hurricane Hunters in America.

Internet access for RNZAF C-130Js!!!!! Wow they do not have to miss any important rugby game!!!

Regards,

Charl, I agree wholeheartedly with you. The only replacement for one Herk is another Herk and the new Js will carry on the sterling work the old Hs did.
Not that I have soft spot for 130s.... okay, I do.
