to MSFS 2020 or to 2024 .. that is the question

Postby deeknow » Wed Feb 26, 2025 4:24 pm

Hey all. Quick poll from those that are in either or both camps, or some other camp altogether :P

I dipped my toe in 2020 land when it came out .. quickly ran out of SSD space .. have since added a new 2TB drive an reshuffled some P3D stuff and now good to go .. so the question is ..

reinstall 2020 and enjoy it for what it is with the hope it will be supported in the short term .. and even buy the odd 2020-only title with the hope of future 2024 support
... or ...
go all in on 2024 and only buy addons that are compatible w both or 2024 only ...

thoughts?

PS I dont want to go with installing both otherwise back in the disk space issue

Well you've bought+paid for 2020 so why not keep it as your "Main Sim"
It'll use up maybe 1TB at most, fully loaded with goodies.
Then get 2024 barebones once the FOMO becomes unbearable, and migrate the stuff as required.

As we stand MSFS 2020 is stable, and you cannot say that about the newbie.
I am not in the camp that finds it irresistible to fiddle with broken software, so cashed in my copy of 2024 and spent it on other lovely goodies.

2020 or 2024?.... .....

Well, there's the rub... :o ....!

My copy of FS2020 is running flat-out on my Gaming Computer!
As a low and slow flyer, I wish FS2020 had more FS2024 Flora ground scenery improvements.

Maybe 2024 in my hard drive later?
No hurry at the moment!

Regarding space in SSD drive, I heard that MS2024 has two space saving features. One is that MS2024 uses same files from MS2020 if you have both in your SSD drive. The second one is that MS2024 relies LESS on space in SSD drive and MORE on streaming.

Therefore, MS2024 actually uses much less space in SSD drive than MS2020.

Actually, I haven't had too many issues with 2024 - so, I'm all in for 2024.
Apart the initial re-configuring of buttons, etc I've overcome those.
Maybe, because I work in IT, I'm used to changes in new software, and probably get a kick out of learning new features.

Big plus is the shorter load times. Oh, and the wonderful graphics.
Not into career mode, so haven't been into that feature.

I'd agree if you're not too worried about career mode which seems to be where the worst problems are, 2024 is fantastic for free flight. For me the positives - better performance, quicker load times, better graphics, dramatically improved details at low level, better flight model for most of the default aircraft etc. make up for the downsides. My main problem right now is the AI traffic which is an absolute mess even compared to 2020, but you can always disable it if it gets too distracting. I haven't touched 2020 since 2024 released.

I tried out MSFS 2024 when it first dropped, but quickly ran into the issues most people were complaining about. There was definitely an element of being quite comfortable in MSFS 2020, and not wanting to go through the cumbersome process of re-mapping my various peripherals.

I'm starting to run into performance bottlenecks on my current machine, and will be building a new one in the coming months. I may take the opportunity to dip my feet into MSFS 2024 again and reassess - time will tell!

Thanks for the votes and contributions lads, have decided to stay w MSFS 2020 and buy titles that are 2024 compatible where possible.

As yaz prolly know I mostly fly freighters, so bought my first couple of add-on airports (both 2020/2024 compat), MM Simulations EBLG Liege, and SimWings PANC Anchorage. Gonna connect those up w something like KORD/Chicago or KCVG/Cincinnati and prolly add EDDP/Leipzig and EGSS/Stanstead at some point. Heavies ahoy !!!
