PNG Bush

Took the Lama on a jungle outing in PNG: ORBX less 40% scenery, why not?
The mission: Carting stuff from Guwasa to Meninga, and return

Image

Nothing it couldn’t handle; I wondered how it would go with a fixed winger.
My word, the LIGHT

Image

Like driving through a children’s illustrated storybook

Image

Taking off, back to AYGW, very suddenly the humidity went to 110%, big fat raindrops (with great sound effects) reducing visibility to worthless.
I wondered how many wrecked Porters were strewn about these mountains, hoping to “Just” make it in.
The strip can be seen above the spinner in the shot bottom left.
I got in after two circuits, only because the Pilatus is made to change direction, and stop, very quickly.

Image

I imagine there are guys doing this for a living...

Good idea: Looking at a sample YT clip I think the sim is trying too hard, and blowing out the colours.
It does its best, and the sense of the place is there, but...
Ah well, $16

Dino...man you are connected!
First clip on that page is exactly what I was talking about, and is the takeaway from my sim experience:
It was fine, and then it rained.
High stress RAIN

That clip is in Papua, not New Guinea. They're different countries. That aside, the flying that I did in Papua is 100% more challenging than in PNG. The strips and weather in PNG seem to be much easier than over the border. LOTS of wrecked Porters and Caravans in Papua, that's for sure.

Thanks Nick, hoped you'd stop by...and now I'm going to give Papua a go!
Looking at a map, you know the colonial Europeans dipped in to the area:
Straight line borders, places called New Britain and Bismarck Archipelago

The locals sure took it to them by sticking to Fak-Fak in West Papua.
So many little islands, no wonder the history is a little messy.

Charl, I see some of my recent ones are not showing either - that has happened a couple of times over the years. The website times out, with no further explanation, but it has always come back when their maintenance has been completed.
Here's hoping...

The Germans were big in PNG before the Australians. There's a little town called Finschafen a little ways out of Lae. Indonesia and Papua were Dutch and you can see it in the architecture. The people and culture in Papua are surprisingly different to the people in PNG though despite how recent they've been on different sides of an imaginary line. If you're going to fly in Papua, start in Timika (WAYY) and head up to Wamena (WAVV), down to Oksibil (WAJO) and finally up to Sentani (WAJJ). That's a route that you could be reasonably expected to do in a day in a Caravan or similar. I've not looked around that area in MSFS but some of the village airstrips might be there.

Ah. Right, thank you I'll leave the link then.

Whoops posts crossed - thanks Nick I will go look for some bush strips in the region.
The ORBX addon seems hardly worth shelling out for, maybe stock will do!

Top tip thanks, can't wait to get my new GPU and rip into MSFS in areas like this ... just need a fistful of $$$
