It landed safely not long ago....evidently a bird strike on take off.
Question, could he have not just flown off the coast and dumped fuel ?

Nope. Saved some money as a result.

737s are not equipped with fuel dump systems. The original design was too small to require this, and adding a fuel dump system to the later, larger variants would have incurred a large weight penalty. Boeing instead demonstrated an "equivalent level of safety". Depending on the nature of the emergency, 737s either circle to burn off fuel or land overweight. If the latter is the case, the aircraft must be inspected by maintenance personnel for damage before being returned to service.

On a slightly unrelated but interesting note, D-ADLR that shows up on that radar track is an interesting aircraft to follow - here to perform atmospheric research over the Southern Ocean, its flight tracks often take it very far south out of Christchurch towards Antarctica.

It looked like FJ got a good smack in the nose. That would have made a noise. Typical Stuff reporting. They livestream for ages and the lose the feed when the aircraft is on short finals and get it back again at the end of the landing run. Doh!
If it was serious then they would have just simply landed overweight.
