London City – Isle of Man with the Avro RJ70

A short hop, but one with plenty of character.
Departure from London City (EGLC) is always something special — that steep climb-out between the Thames and Canary Wharf demands precision and timing. Today’s flight with the Manxman Avro RJ70 began under a heavy overcast, with that typical grey London atmosphere that makes the city feel both alive and a little claustrophobic.

Once airborne, the RJ70 showed what it was built for — smooth handling, plenty of power, and that unmistakable hum of four small jets working in perfect harmony. The route over the Irish Sea was uneventful, with low cloud and patches of sunlight breaking through from time to time.

The approach into Isle of Man (EGNS) was more demanding. Runway 09 doesn’t give you a single extra meter to spare — it’s short and framed by rising terrain. This is where the Avro’s excellent flap and spoiler system really proves its worth. Full configuration, careful speed management, and she settled in firmly but safely.

Not a long flight, but a satisfying one — the sort that reminds you why regional jet flying still has its charm.

Nice shots! Somehow it reminds me of a baby C-17...
