First solo today

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby ZK-Brock » Sun Feb 03, 2008 8:27 pm

Well since today I turned 16 it seemed appropriate to try flying an aeroplane without the assistance of an instructor. Turned up at the club at 8:15 so I could fly before the sea breeze started. 3 circuits dual preceded my first solo. Also saw one of my old instructors taxi past in a turbine fletcher jump plane.

From the fuel pumps I taxied along the taxiway, got the the holding point - oh s***, did I put the fuel cap back on after refuelling? Called up the tower, stopped the engine and had a quick look. Phew, still there. I was a wee bit embarrassed, but I would have been more embarrased if avgas started pissing out the tank as I climbed away! :whoops:

Since I'd shut down twice in the last 10minutes I thought it best to do another run-up, so after that I got airborne on runway 02 and climbed away. I found that I held my climb speed easily, getting an extra 200fpm or so due to the decreased weight (about a million people have told me to expect this!). Downwind, gained landing clearance but then they cancelled that, I ended up number 2 behind a C185. The landing was okay, I ended up only using 10* of flap cos I got a bit low (best not to get low in something like a 150) so I floated a wee bit. Taxied to the club for a coke and photos.

I would have like do more solo time that day instead of just .1, so I booked in again for lated that morning, getting another .4 for my logbook.

Then later I did ANOTHER flight (we're up to 4 logbook entries now...), non-instrument circuit comps. Much fun :)

As for pics, none were taken of me actually flying, only a few of me taxiing on a mates camera (which I don't have), and some posing pics beforehand.

Yeh bro thats me seeing how much oil's in there

Good stuff mate. Twas gonna take dr des up for some "practical physics" in 7th form but never got around to it, I think he wasn't all that keen on putting his life in the hands of one of his students  Perhaps you can !

Congratulations! :) 40 degrees of flaps is great for those shorter strips, but not so welcome if you have to go around!
