A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

I don't care as long as Air New Zealand stays operating 737's (any variant)

Isn't it evident?? Boeing are my favourite aircraft.

P.S. that's is my real birthday but I wish to keep my real age secret to keep you all pondering.

Could Mount Cook pick up some of the SAS Q400s?
They would probably be pretty cheap.

733s leaving as early as 2012 apparently, though they don't need to be replaced until 2020ish.
Will be a pity to see the 733s leave, hopefully they are replaced with the Boeing Y1 or another variant of the 737.

I think SAS are still hanging onto their Q400s though. I think it turned out to be one part that was failing and it wasn't Bombardier's fault.
I also think they signed a deal with Bombardier about keeping what they had and ordering more. Wikipedia says they still have 14 on order.
The options Air Nelson have are probably even good enough compared to getting SAS' Q400s.

There was talk of replacing them with the 737 700s. Would be nice with winglets wub.gif (look great and save money at the same time)
The 737 700 would be a nice aircraft to have on the trunk routes. That would be similar to the 733 and would be easy for training etc.

Winglets? Wicked! thumbup1.gif wub.gif drool.gif
The 737 700 was the NG replacement for the 737 300 I think, so its a match made in Heaven.

Also there have been rumours of 737 800 slots becoming available for sale to Air NZ although the 700 makes more sense.

Going back to the actual topic at hand, I've heard that purchasing the current leased ATRs when the leases run out was an option.
It's easier and maybe cheaper than the other options, with the possible exception of the Q400.

Fingers crossed they will go for the new ATR's biggrin.gif

I didn't know the board meeting was that close.
I knew it was end of July-beginning of August, but I didn't know it was today.
Hopefully there will be good news. biggrin.gif

I'm guessing they'll go for the new ATR's winkyy.gif
They bought an ATR sim about a year ago, so probably wouldn't have bothered with that unless they were sticking with ATR.
The new ATR looks nice biggrin.gif
Looking forward to the decision....

I have to agree with you smile.gif
Your comment about the sim is good as they probably wouldn't have got it if they weren't staying ATR.

Was that not exactly what he just said?

Yes that was what he just said, I think Daniel was commenting in agreement.
I have to agree with the comments about the sim too, a bit of a waste of time and money if they weren't going to buy more ATRs.

Well the new ATR looks much the same from the outside anyway, from the renderings I've seen.

.. but the new ATR 72 600 has a completey different cockpit so they will need a new sim for the 600 variant - maybe thats an indication they will stay with the current fleet but that runs counter with the foreign aviation press - although maybe they willl hold onto the sim for training overseas pilots.

..you are partly right Charl - the 500 series is the latest version of the ATR - Air NZ rolled over the fleet about 7 years ago replacing the 200 series.

Like everything in a public forum, it's open to speculation and rumour, as is my comment about the sim. I've never seen it, nor spoken to anyone operating it, but I have spoken with someone who has flown it (this week). I also heard they were having trouble certifying it, so maybe that might mean they sell it along with their ATR's.. so who knows really...

Regards

Mount Cook got a fixed base sim for training but I think they still send some people to Bangkok.
It is based at Christchurch airport i think.

Here is a link for those wanting to know more...

Another Idea that I have had is could they just upgrade them to a 600?
They could put in the newer engines, give it a better flight deck and a few other things.
Air Nelson was thinking about upgrading their saabs when it came to replacing them.
