Went to check on my folks again today, and this time my father gave me a little book written by a relation of mine (my step uncle) , called Vernon Benner....now past away, from Te Puke. (I had never heard of him untill today!)

He flew spitfires during the war (501 sqn) I think i might take the book out to the museum..he (Mr Benner) has placed a note inside the cover, saying that he was disappointed about all the mistakes in the book, after all his hard work....apparently it wasnt editored that well....but really interesting reading.
He met guys like "Chalky" white and Alan Deere, and Johnny Houlton....just amazing stuff.
If anyone is interested the book is called "Born to fly" by Vernon Benner".......Im happy to loan it out , before i donate it.

Marty

Also , along these lines ....Im researching another relative who was killed in action on 23/24th of september 1942. He was Sgt John Wllace Henry 26 years old (rear gunner) on Lancaster W4230/P of #9 SQN , 5 group...based at Waddington.

Ive found pictures of his grave in Denmark ....but i would like a picture of the aircraft(or him), from what i can gather the aircraft was brand new...first op, and shot down over Denmark, and crashed into the sea north of Lollond Island...all 7 were killed.
His body and one other were found and buried at Svino(southern Zealand Denmark).....the others are still missing.
His service number was NZ405266.

If anyone knows of ...anyone who may have served on that Sqn....and may have a picture, i would be very greatful .

As ANZAC day gets closer , i open his file again...and wonder. The sqn log is quite chilling to read....all they say is "aircraft did not return from op, no signal or message received"

If you can help , that would be great.

Cheers

Marty
