I wasn't referring to purchasing these items with student loan cash (as used to happen) but as an indication that if you want to fly say goodbye to those luxury items (they are not must haves, which the modern youth seem to think they are). All part of the sacrifice and commitment. The whole idea is to get as many qualifications and hours in the shortest time possible and when you are as young as possible.
As an aside Air NZ have now announced the NZ Aviation institute which will be formally announced today.
Essentially it is the airlines involvement in ab-initio training and will involve collaboration with 5 FTO's (to be announced today). As I understand it applicants will be selected (criteria yet to be defined) and commence their training at one of the 5 FTO's. The idea is to get them to MEIR standard and have the ATPL subjects completed. After this the students will proceed to the Airline integration course (run by the Aviation institute and known as the school of flight) where there will be a focus on airline procedures and multi crew integration etc.
All of this will be funded by the student and through the student loan scheme. In fact industry involvement in ab-initio training is a requirement for the student loan system to continue in any shape and form in this industry.
The idea is to generate and guarantee a continued supply of a pool of pilots who have demonstrated above average skills and talent in which third level operators can select their new hire pilots from. It is not a guarantee of a job but these graduates will be considered and interviewed first.

I had to scavenge as many hours as I could to do my C-Cat. I ended up with 20 hours of ferry flights to Nelson for maintainance... at .3 or .4 at a time! You have to get quite inventive to get people to contribute to the cost of your flying.

Just pull out a couple of go-arounds on the ferry flights.

I don't see it being fair for 'older' men and women who will most likely never make it to Jets, the whole reason the funding was introduced in the first place. I doubt the scheme was introduced due to the lack of 185 pilots or lack of flying instructors.
After reading this comment I had to say something, your comment about older men and women who will most likely never make it to the jets is completely unfounded. You will find that age in this case can actually be quite advantageous for when you are applying for a job within an airline. This gentleman who is in his 40's that is currently training would have a far better chance than you at getting into a jet position, having hours isn't everything when it comes to applying for an airline position the amount of life experience you have behind you is also very important to take into account. You will also find quite often airlines will employ "older" pilots way before they employ these young fellas fresh out of flight school.
Do you really think that everyone that goes into these courses are actually aiming for an airline career anyway? A lot of people are more than happy with scenic flights or instructing. Not everybody that gets into flying has a passion to work for an airline it just depends on what that person is into. The student loan scheme wasn't introduced just for these kids fresh out of school to access (whom most will never even get an airline job) it was for all new zealanders including "older folk" too.

Can you clarify which part of the rules this applies to? A healthy debate is good, especially seeing as this is a forum.
