Amazing to see the helio structure twist and flex almost throwing the pilot and seat out .

They do say Xmas is costly time for many .

I agree, I bet everyone else working with the structure was.....looks like he was knocked out at the end as well from the TVNZ website footage.

wow lucky for rescuers the thing didnt light up ,brave to say the least ,clearly the pilot was not thrown out of it so i wonder why its reported this way while video shows a different event ..lucky anyway nobody else was hurt..

It looks to me that he ended up behind the cockpit (out of his seat and belt), does it look this way to anyone else?

Shows the importance of good ground crew, he would never have seen what he hit. Helmets arnt required for commercial work and with the cost of them going up and up, I know a lot of pilots who dont use them. Its a bit different over here, its a legal requirement in most states. Good to see he walked away.

What did he hit exactly? Just before the crash you can see the cable attached to the rig below the helo get pulled but that wouldn't be enough to cause that to happen?

Looks like the skid got caught in the structure on the left hand side of the aircraft. With the vibration it started to resonate. Thats how it looks to me anyway.

Someone on site thought the tail rotor walked into the stay cable - you can see the tail go up, then snap off, downward, as the rotor turned.

watching it a second time, the pilot was very lucky no to've been thrown right out of the chopper as it spun around. You can see his high-vis vest well outside the cockpit.

Just had a look at the photos, tail rotor doesnt look damaged to me.

Watching the footage again on TV one news it looked like the main rotor hit the lift cable which appears to still be attached to the helo and the tower.

you'd think the owner of a company if anyone could afford a helmet, especialy on a job like this

why wasn't he waering his shoulder harnesses? they are retractable

the seat is mounted to rails seperate to the belt anchors, looks like it broke the rails and tipped backwards, lapbelt still attached

the line was still attached between the top of the tower and his hook, the ground crew appeared to be dealing with the slack when something made it go tight

he wasn't running a remote hook so the idea would of been to climb up and unhook it once everything was secure. Normal practise would of been descend down by the tower and button it off the hook then land

all in all a very lucky man and lucky his crew jumped in and shut the fuel off, a runaway engine is what tends to start a fire

End off the day , even with the skill .. why not a long line and ground crew checking structure distance ... I,m not a H,pilot but in my old work in possible chance , you don't do it .
