I prefer UT and GEX, why?
These are textures only. GEX and UT are coastlines, rivers, forrests, streets and railways and so on. In february comes South America... What I have seen from ORBX... Afghanistan is far to green.. I have overflown Afghanistan two times on my way to Vietnam in 1986 and there was nothing so green... ORBX brings its Legoland for the world... Oh no! Not with me!

wow quite a debate of which i understand about 30% .( Being generous to myself i think )

I only made my comments (re the forum NZFF), because i do believe this is one of the most open forums of its type around.
I do own a considerable slice of the Orbx product, and Im really happy with it .... it serves a purpose for me, as does VLC , Mike , Robs and Ians work.

However, i stand by my opinion on the subject forum .... business or not, it seems there are standard responses to all subjects, and thats not me. I wont be going back.

Sorry if this is a little disjointed (Adjective :Lacking a coherent sequence or connection.) .... tongue.gif (Ive been teaching English tonight.)

Regarding the whole world thing ... I dont care. I have what i like .

Just as long as all you (NZ) guys keep on doing what you do so well , Im happy smile.gif

Regards

SP.

Announced on their forum today by John Venema ORBX CEO....start saving chaps.

"In 2013 we will be releasing a FTX product that covers the entire world with FTX textures combined from the twelve different regions we have developed since 2008 including England and Wales. It won't be a perfect solution because it is textures only (no landclass, airports, POIs, or geodata), but it will cover the whole globe with Orbx so you never have to experience FSX default again.

It will include custom autogen, 3D lights and some custom trees as well, which will need an installer that manages some global files, but you will be able to uninstall it and revert to default FSX again if you wish.

I am testing an alpha build at the moment and I can promise you most of the places mentioned in this thread look beautiful covered in Orbx textures. I did a dusk flight over the south of France last week and to see all the 3D lights twinkling over villages and towns was magical

The price of this product (less than $200) will include free perpetual upgrades including a constant flow of upgraded airports at key locations around the world, for example Helsinki in Finland or Manila in the Phillipines. We are building a dedicated team of people who will do nothing but work on continual improvements, POIs and airports around the world. Additionally, as Orbx releases the much more detailed and sophisticated regions around the world, we will dip into the expanding texture pool to finesse the global product, all at no charge.

Stay tuned for the formal announcement in January along with many screenshots and some video footage.

If you can imagine your whole world covered in Orbx, you won't have to wait too much longer today by John Venema CEO ORBX "

Thanks Pete , i dont want to get caught up in this whole odd thing.
I know what i like , and I'll stick with it....from both sides.

I dont think our own guys (Timmo, Mike, Rob ,and Ian and others) know how good they really are.

As i said, i dont really understand all the tech talk (mesh ...fishnets ...whatever) ... but just keep doing it (NZ) guys thumbup1.gif

Fishnets! laugh.gif laugh.gif clapping.gif Nice one - that gave me a good laugh! Cost me a snort of tea up my left nostril, though... ohmy.gif

I most definitely agree that Timmo, Mike, Rob, Ian et al are an excellent bunch of chaps who've done wonders for NZ flight simming. I can't imagine where we'd be without them. notworthy.gif

What I found really interesting was the following statement (issued in an earlier thread):

"To be honest the price is a bargain especially given we'll be putting people on staff to continually upgrade it. Think of this: if every Orbx customer purchased it there would be sufficient level of funding for further detailed regions, airports and new projects we've always wanted to do. Orbx is stifled by its inability to grow and build more content and this is the vehicle with which we can fund our growth moving forward" (my emphasis). The thread is here (FTX fora registration required).

That this did not appear in the official Press Release is rather telling.

This quote from JV is interesting -- 'Think of it as GEX on steroids. We only provide replacement textures with out own autogen buildings and trees and 3D lights (in the landclass textures, not roads) and then we'll add key airports to the package in the form of patches. So there is nothing to stop you adding other landclass or vector data addons to use with our textures.'

I know which vector/landclass addon I'd like to use. This suggests that it'll be a lot more open that other Orbx stuff, so compatibility might be less of an issue, although it may take some work. It would certainly extend the life of FSX for a lot of people.

After being out of the forum for sometime I see some great changes. VLC + ORBX textures what most people have been waiting for in a long time. This should make for an interesting day when this is released.

Have to agree there Kelvin. I fly both, VLC in FSX and Orbx in P3D. Each package brings its own strengths to the party but Timmo's data combined with Orbx textures would make it the best of both worlds, a very compelling alternative.

Looking forward to it. thumbup1.gif

Good point, it will be good to see hybrid options arise in different regions as well as here in NZ

Well, FTX Global is now mere hours away from release and I'm very much looking forward to seeing the results of Orbx textures combined with VLC data. biggrin.gif

Interesting times.
