A True Kiwi P-51D

Read and report on flightsim developers progress of upcoming or completed products

Hey all,

I thought this might be the best place to introduce this model. I've been working on a payware product by the name of "Mustang Tales: Post-WWII and Navy Service" through Warbirdsim, and as the title hints at, our main goal has been to tell some of the stories from the Mustang's legacy from WWII until today, through 16 different individual models. One of the earliest within this project is that of the P-51D-30-NT's that were manufactured in mid-late 1945, by the Dallas NAA plant, for the Royal New Zealand Air Force. For a specific RNZAF example, we chose to depict NZ2423, as it was in 1945 with No.1 Auckland Squadron, and this model is a specific depiction of that aircraft throughout. At this time, the aircraft were still fresh in their USAAF delivery markings, and had the roundels painted over the stars & bars - the top line of the data block reads "New Zealand Government", followed by the standard USAAF information. The aircraft is very factory stock, and built to late factory specifications (being amongst the very last NAA manufactured Mustangs). By the time of the manufacture of these aircraft, items like the rocket launcher stubs, g-suit provisions, SCR-695 IFF set and ARA-8 set, and cuffless "square-tip" Hamilton Standard prop blades had become standard. Unlike earlier manufactured P-51D's, which had the battery in the aft cockpit, on the P-51D-30-NA, -25-NT, and -30-NT, all fitted with the SCR-695 IFF set, the battery had to be relocated to the engine compartment, in front of the firewall. When this took place, a battery vent (with scoop) was added to the port-side wing elbow fairing, and a drain line had to be added underneath the starboard-side wing shoulder fairing (a rubber hose extending down from the lower-aft wing/fuselage fairing). On the P-51D-25-NT and P-51D-30-NT, only, the external power socket was also relocated, and can be seen in the relocated position at the base of the starboard fuselage roundel/insignia. Mounted at the back of the headrest is the inertia switch/timer and indicator lights for the IFF detonator. Also, the aircraft has the unmistaken profile, late-Dallas canopy.

I hope you'll like it, and if you have any questions please ask! As an additional note, NZ2423 is one of the few original RNZAF Mustangs that still survives to this day, and is the same aircraft that was flown on the last official RNZAF Mustang flight, on May 30, 1957.

The standard factory-fresh P-51D-30-NT cockpit:

Here are some more details.

The aircraft features the full APS-13 tail warning radar equipment installation, including the bell. The BC-1206 beacon receiver is positioned in the late location, and the full SCR-695 and ARA-8 control panel is fitted. The canopy warning placard just aft of the canopy crank is also a very late production detail, not found on earlier Mustangs.

G-suit provisions were provided stock on late-production P-51D's, and this image illustrates the g-suit plumbing line and where it was located in the cockpit. The guard over the guns/gun sight switch is also a late production detail.

Although this screenshot is from another model/variant in the product, it illustrates one of several new features that are included, where in this case the authentic (as included with every factory-produced Mustang) check list can be taken out of the document holder and viewed up front. The check list and the other documents that you will find in the document holder were recreated from the original NAA blueprints for those items.

I don't know if they would have generally operated with ammunition loaded, or what type would have been used, so I just made it rather 'generic'. In this view, you can see the different authentic rivet types, as used in original P-51 production - the silver rivets are anodized, and the yellow rivets are iridite.

Here in the aft cockpit, you can see the SCR-522 radio set and the SCR-695 IFF set. Mounted to the back of the headrest is the intertia switch and indicator lights for the IFF detonator.

Thank you Ian! I did find a superb starboard-profile photo of this aircraft while searching online, from 1945, and it was an instant attraction. ; )

Ian, I am afraid this is a new model (the first to be built specifically to recreate the RNZAF P-51's in all detail (as far as I know). The main section of this new product covers P-51D's and F-51D's from 1945 until 1955, through the USAAF, USAF, USAF ANG, NACA, RNZAF, RAAF, SAAF, ROKAF, and RCAF. Also included is the historic Navy-modified P-51D-5-NA 44-14017 (complete with tail hook and catapult gear) from 1944, a "what if" Navy FJ-1D 'Seahorse', a rag-tag ex-Guatemalan AF F-51D, and the modern restored P-51D "Geraldine", thus spanning from 1944 until the present day.

The product will be available at some point this coming week, fingers crossed. I'll also be adapting my past RNZAF repaint for this new model and new textures and release a few more.

Here is some additional coverage of a few of those that has already been posted:

I humbly submit that, "Mustang Tales: Post WWII and Navy Service" is now available at http://warbirdsim.com/

Here is a download page for the product user guide, as also included (please read carefully before first using the aircraft in FSX, otherwise your experience with the aircraft will be greatly diminished): https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads...3133405/82c619

If you are interested in the product paintkit (just completed in-time!), please send your purchase details and specific request to Warbirdsim Support: support@warbirdsim.com

Many thanks Ian and LowGlow for your compliments on the RNZAF model!

Thank you Splitpin! They surely can't be 'the best' - the A2A model is amazing, and offers features that I cannot even begin to dream of incorporating into my own work.

Mustang Tales Update

Hi all,

I have been informed that new updated files are now ready. If you have already purchased the product, please re-download the files from your download links and re-install. If you purchase/download the product from here on out, the updates will have already been included.

This update:

-Makes sure that when loading either the RCAF or SAAF models (the only ones that were affected), that only the correct textures will load every time
-Corrects the tail number on the starboard-side of "Little Beast II"
-Corrects a few items in the aft-most cockpit of "FF-197"

I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience!

Here's the start of a few repaints I've had planned for the RNZAF P-51D-30-NT model. Like the example included, this too is a No.1 (Auckland) Squadron Mustang, but is a late scheme from the early-mid 50's rather than the early scheme from 1945.

Thank you Ian. I've just found another photo of the original aircraft which shows the fuselage fuel cap stencils and wing roundels to much better advantage, and I've gotten those items wrong, so I'll be going back and fixing them before the repaint is released.
