Not sure if this has been noted before but a quick search turned up nothing so I'm guessing that this could be news for some. Sounds just the sort of thing that some of us oldies would appreciate, and maybe even young Ian W. would like to see it too - actually Ian would be the keenest of us all I think.

Quote from the website:
'Shady Lady' is the epic story of the B-24 Liberator aircraft called 'Shady Lady' that set off from Darwin on Friday, 13 August 1943 on what was at that time the world's longest ever bombing mission of WWII to the oil refineries at Balikpapan, Borneo.

Shortly before running out of fuel, 'Shady Lady' was crash landed on a remote salt pan in Northern Western Australia after flying for 16 hours and 35 minutes. With help from the Aboriginal Community, 'Shady Lady' amazingly flew again. A 'Presidential Citation' for the crew, was re-issued in June 2011 to acknowledge their outstanding bravery and courage.

It screened on TV last night ... Discovery Channel I think, so no doubt it will be back, again and again.

It was quite a "good watch" although left more questions than answers about the result of the mission this aircraft was on, and what happened to the other 10 aircraft
that flew but didn't get a mention.

Bother, would have liked to have seen it - mind you I dropped Sky a while back so wouldn't have done me any good to have known in advance .. . .

Watched an old movie the other day on Sky "Air Command"(Robert Taylor) They were flying the predecessor to the Hell Cat ... awful special effects , naf story line..... but par for the course back then.

Along those lines .....

TVNZ Heartland on ANZAC day (8.30pm) "The John Pohe" story. The first Moari pilot in the RNZAF , 22 missions , and finally executed in a POW camp.
To quote the sky book .... " Pohe flew a mission that led to his capture, and contribution to one of the most famous events of WW2 .... The great escape. His extraordinary life ended when he was placed in front of a German firing squad. Incredibly , Pohe removed his blindfold and looked his executioners in the eye"

Worth a look i think ....I have to be honest , i never heard of him .....and Im sorry for that.

That is the thing , so many actions and stories from the World Wars and the others that followed , makes for great interest and research as well , so many i have not heard of but least like to find out and follow what these people did so much even buying more books to further the search ... you can't cover everyone but sure as hell can try . cool.gif

True ..... I will watch it. As you said Ian, " you can't cover everyone " but , the first Maori RNZAF pilot , you would think this would have been known by more ..... i bet if he was a sports person we would know him.
As much as i have had opinions on the indigenous population before ... i feel bad , as an ex server , for not knowing more about this man. But in my defense, i was never told .... it took 55 years , thats sad, or maybe my fault for not asking.
Anyway, on the 25th I'll remember him with all the rest.....
