Windows 10 and FSX

Yes, thats right, Windows 10!!!

For a few weeks 'now I've been playing with the Windows 10 beta, sorry Technical Release Candidate. So I thought I would see if it was compatible with FSX. Now I'm not totally sold on Win10. Yeah it has brought back the start menu, which seems to be the b...d child of the start menu and metro central, but it lacks the refined looks of Windows Aero. But hell it loads really fast. And I mean REALLY fast (Like on the i3 test rig in under 6 seconds from button to desktop on a mechanical drive). So I decided to see if it was compatible with FSX. Now Win10 will ship with DX12, but the beta doesn't, it still has DX11. I loaded up FSX with ORBX global and yes, it ran, with some horrific results. On the default trike flight at Friday Harbour I was getting 0.4 FPS... I REALLY hope this is not an omen of things to come and is just an echo of beta jitters but it did sorta run so indicated it was sort of compatible. I would put this down to Win10 being a hybrid of 7 and 8 and FSX running on both but those frames are just painful... Heres a screenshot of FSX running in Win 10 and the start menu...

0.4 FPS .. I think my Win7 still has a good few years in it yet, I did wonder if the transition will be the same with FSX as it was with FS9 with new operating systems and the suited PC .. I put FS9 back on simply has help desk for others and the results off it running on today's PC/OS is incredible, ... but this 0.4 WOW pass!

Yeah given how fast it loaded and was loading other programes too the FPS totally floored me. As I said The beta shipped with DX11 which is pretty much what every Win7 and 8 system is running just now and FSX runs on both systems so it SHOULD have run on this, so I'm not sure if that is signalling a massive incompatibility with older 32bit programes or just a glitch in the Beta. The fact it even loaded it would indicate it's compatible but the frames indicate a serious problem. Will keep playing with it as the release updates come out.

Again it is a Beta release so I will keep seeing how it goes as updates come out and I look forward to when they roll out the DX12 update but as smooth and fast as Win10 is I'm not a fan. I don't like the look of it (No Aero), I don't like the hybrid start menu and I'll be running Win7 for as long as I can.

Looking at the interface showed in your screen, it dose look they are moving into simply the hand held apps rather , FS is definitely a desktop use and not portable, many editing programs cannot use app's , since MS moved away from FS .. it almost pointless to update if that is all you are going to use it for.

Yeah I use small icons as you can see on the task bar but on default settings it would definitely get the benefit from a touch screen or other such device.

One of the primary things with FS on an app or portable LP was the ability to AGN for example .. a simple task like that and with great foresight they never thought off annotating using a laptop and this again has only come up recent , I planning a brought a LP 4/5 years back now thinking be idea BUT .. the execution window and interface was not going to work .. so much for the beta testing .
