Nice one Tim cool.gif , that camo really gets in ..... I love this plane, back in Riccarton high school nearly forty years ago often flying out off Wigram .... other classic was one display at the Omaka Warbird around 2005 and run into engine problems, so they brought down to Christchurch , loved listening to the engine run-ups especially 11.00/11.30 at night , the good thing - whinding up the idiots who buy a house on the old air force ground then complain about aircraft noise .... this one put a smile on dial as it was here for 3/4 days biggrin.gif , the Saturday morning it took off and went up in a spiral and the sound was music to my ears.

Thank you Ian. Yes I too get a large laugh from those whom bounce up and down about aircraft noise, when they buy a house in the area!!! TWATS!!!
I can not explain it but even though she had Twin Wasp 14 cylinder radials, you could always tell when a Caribou was near by before you could see it... Such a sweet sound and fantastic aircraft.

Tim...

Anyhow, I really miss the days living at RAAF Base Richmond, watching and listening to the Caribou do their things. My father has over 2000 hrs flying the Caribou in his pilot log. So I have no choice but to love this aircraft because I spent some time around them as a kid.

I think the most impressive opportunity for me was to be on the tarmac at Avalon on the last RAAF display , least the aircraft , getting up close whilst bringing it in then the final run up and shut down, it had that sound that was unique , think that made it special for me.

Used to get them doing low-level training all round here, including overnights at Gatton College (YGAT), which was about 3km away. They would take off from there, come around to pick up the railway line (the direct track for Amberley) and come barrelling down my street at about 500AGL.
All gone now sad.gif

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

Mike on the occasions I saw the Caribou fly I think it was the engine sound that gave it its strength, one thing the Alphasim/Virtavia model has done very well.

Yes, unmistakable, and it carried a long way, too

This was a most difficult competition as to me all aircraft are beautiful and elegant (though maybe the airtruck could be an exception!). So I have to beg forgiveness from A2A for using their Heinkel for this competition. It isn't really ugly but it does have some odd features which at first sight may be a little distracting from the normal sleek bodies that we all love and admire. However, even all these antennae soon start to grow on the impartial observer . . . .

This is the A2A Aircraft factory He219 A2 on a night flying exercise over Omaka, looking back towards Havelock. This will soon be a new addition to the Omaka air museum, it has been under wraps until now so as not to disturb the sensibilities of all those well know rabid WWI aircraft enthusiasts. (you know who I might mean).

At least now Doug won't be hounding me to get my entry in for this month! winkyy.gif

Could be the ugliest, or the prettiest. Depends if you were bobbing in the English Channel at the time. The Catalina PBY off the Fiordland coast
