Just out of interest...

...which way do you NZ Blokes switch electrical things off and on, around the house?

Over here, in Good Queen Brenda land, we switch things; "down" for on, and "up" for off.

After spending 15+ years, every bleedin' day, pretending to fly American designed aircraft, I finding that I am constantly switching appliances OFF, instead of ON, and wondering why things are not working!

After landing my imaginary Cessna 150, and switching everything OFF (down), I find that I am now waiting hours for my electric kettle to boil for a cup of tea after I have put the switch UP for on!

It gets so frustrating!.... ..... ....!

I blame the Americans for arranging everything arse-backwards!

(They also make a Pig's ear of our English Language!)... ...!

Paul..... ... ... ...!

P.S....I love my American Chums dearly...when they are not shooing each other to death!.... :D ...!

Samo switch's down for lights on here in the NZ ..... I recall a US TV show "Love and Marriage" ... the two kids .. Ole 'Bud' decides to repair the outside light ... yells to his sister 'Kelly' turn off the power ...... seconds later ZZZZZZZ Bang ! :o ... 'Bud' comes waking out - hair standing on end and fried like a fizzle ... then asks 'Kelly' do you know how to spell off .. She starts 'O' .... pause  .... long seconds later ole 'Bud' looks at her and simply says 'Kelly' why don't you just get a bucket off water , she with a big smile says Ok ..... and off she go's  DUMB BLONDE !

WOWZERS!... ...!

We have so much in common!....

Electrical switches down for on, water taps anti-clockwise for on....

...and driving/riding on the left-hand side of the road.

Whatever next?..... ...!

Paul... ... ...!

Yeah, kinda makes me embarrassed that we are giving away our Union Jack flag...

It always struck me as particularly stupid that there are different standards for switches -- you shouldn't really have to guess if something is on or not, after all it's tricky to test this sometimes, short of putting your tongue in the socket...

That'd be a forked tongue then? ;)

That would take some getting used to for me. Around here everything is right side for driving or turning knobs to the right for on, and switches are up=on, down=off. (well...the switches aren't exactly true, especially if you have a few co-located that control the same light. Then either direction could work depending on whether the light is already off or on.)

I wonder why the differences exist.
