CHCH rebuild and others

One thing I never really thought off, the Christchurch rebuild and how they put those cranes up, I needed to go walking
this morning .. so I checked the weather map .. the wind was typical , ICE cold and the breeze picking up , I thought
about what it would like to be a crane driver ... then thought 'Hang-on' those tower cranes .. how the hell do they put
them up , nothing like a bitta impressive engineering ...

Funny, on the news the other night, mention of a building completed and was getting used only for them to tear it done again because it did not fit in the new city plan ... now that's who did the planning there

I finally got back to see Christchurch. I haven't been home in 8 years, and I must say it was incredibly sad to see the central city pretty much a ghost town for tourists.

I loved the cathedral, and it has so many memories, but really it needs to go. The "consultants" need to get shot, I wonder how much they've been paid for the little that has rebuilt since the shake.

To those still in ChCh, I take my hat off to you all.

Great post Ian ..... back in my days in the "zone" i watched a lot of those things going up. Even got to climb up into the cab of one ..... stunning view , but they move a lot ( as in wind ) not for me im afarid .
But they are amazing beasts .... i know i guy who collects scale models of them , in fact any crane .

Thanks Marty, like as many said here, never really thought about the placing or getting the those cranes up,

as kids, me and my brothers we built a 6 story tree on the end off Axton Ave, a dead end street off Bucknell St - now its Cheyanne St , on top was a roofless top and was all nailed to tree .. in a Southerly wind it really swayed , It was so high it was able to be seen from the Sockburn overhead bridge...

It had to be pulled down around 1978 since the council considered as an eyesore ... it also had two balconies and from the top separate levels two flying fox's ... it was about three times the height off today's street lightning concrete lamppost, every kid in the neighbourhood turned up for wargames and slingshot wars.

We made our own fun in them days, and I don't remember anyone getting seriously hurt.
These days, even if you got something like that off the ground (so to speak) the flying foxes would have to be inspected and tagged every six months, you would need kevlar safety nets every 3m so that you would not be hurt falling onto the compulsory 1m thick bark chip cushion at ground level GRRRR

We would have made the CHCH council proud .. we could have a dozen plus kids in our tree house and it would have survived an earthquake .... climb down the tree for breakfast , lunch and dinner , yeah today's world is a bit img src=http://nzff.org/images/smilies/censored2.gif about what kids do ..

I mentioned a run , 12 miles to Kaiopoi .. and I did the 10,000 meters .. got lazy and got second - but today's school kids are limited to 7,000 meters ?
that is one hell off a ..... "someone think of the children crap"

I'm surprised I didn't go into construction ... but when 15/16 and needed work , back then really needed the earthquakes.

Was in Christchurch for two full days before moving upwards and sideways Back home in Perth now.

I really have to get my crap together and start getting online again, I've always found New Zealand to be perfect for flying, big planes - small distances

Back warm Perth , flying shorter distances dose making more entertaining , course all the photo real scenery that is out today.
