That's a great shot, and using B&W for it is a clever touch...just wondering what sort of balloon you used to get the air-to-air pic

I recreated this scenario from the memory of an article in a very old NZ Wings magazine about the trialling of this system for the Wellington Harbour Pilots using a Helicopters NZ Bell212 in this livery. I have been unable to establish the dates of this trial but did unearth a great u tube clip of this Helicopters NZ operation dated in the 1990's

I'll have a scout around and see if I can dig up the article , great idea B-)

485 (RNZAF) Sqn Spitfire Mk IX @ D Day. Realair Spitfire in 485 sqn D-Day markings),taking off from New Plymouth.............

485 Sqn. shot down a total of nine enemy aircraft with no losses on D-Day; these were to be the last enemy aircraft shot down in combat by the sqn

485 Sqn then become a fighter-bomber unit and moved to the continent in July 1944. Starting in France the unit moved through Belgium and the Netherlands. On 1 January 1945 485 Sqn, based at B65 Maldegem, Belgium lost eleven Spitfires on the ground when attacked by Bf 109s during Operation Bodenplatte. Fortunately there were no pilot or ground crew casualties and new Spitfires were available the next day. From late February 1945 there was a temporary move to Cornwall where Typhoons were flown in preparation for a planned conversion to Tempests. A shortage of Tempests meant that this conversion didn't happen. Re-eqiupped with Spitfire Mk XVIs (Spitfire XI powered by a Packard Merlin 266) 485 Sqn ended the war based at airfield B.109/Drope, Germany.485 Sqn was officially disbanded on 26 August 1945. The Squadron's motto is in Māori Ka whawhai tonu ('We will fight on').

The crest from this Squadron was adopted in the late 1960s as the official crest for the then formed RNZAF Strike Wing, based at RNZAF Base Ohakea, North Island, New Zealand. This wing incorporated No. 75 Squadron RNZAF (Vampires) and No. 14 Squadron RNZAF (Canberras). It is now the crest of No. 485 Wing, which parents all RNZAF operational flying units stationed at RNZAF Base Auckland.

He grew with word it was Spitfires but did in fact turn out to be 486 flying Tempests, he was shot down but survived POW camps.

A little history on Newmans Airways Ltd and Ansett New Zealand.
Newmans Airways Ltd Dash 7 ZK-NEX airborne from NZQN

Image

For a period of about two years, between 1985 and 1987 Newmans Airways Ltd operated two De Havilland DHC-7 (Dash 7) aircraft.
These two aircraft were registered as ZK-NEW (c/n 101) and ZK-NEX (c/n 103).
ZK-NEX arrived in NZ on 25-01-1985 and was listed to Newmans on 25-01-1985.
Services began on February 13, 1985 after a launch celebration in Rotorua the day before.
There were three flights a day between Christchurch and Queenstown, two between Christchurch and Rotorua and a single midday flight from Rotorua to Auckland.
Stops at Glentanner were added to the Queenstown flights a few months later.
Newmans Air chose to start operations using DHC-7, although only Glentanner actually required an aircraft with short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities.
Newmans Air planned to move these aircraft into a feeder role serving Wanaka, Te Anau and the West Coast once traffic had built up
sufficiently on the 'trunk' services. Newmans also stated intentions to include Nelson (where Newmans Group was based) in it's network using a third leased DHC-7, but neither of these plans eventuated.
Newmans Air
Founded 1985
Ceased operations 1987
Operating bases Christchurch
Destinations Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch, Glentanner, Queenstown
Parent company Newmans Group

The relaxation of regulation in the aviation sector in 1986 allowed Ansett to take joint ownership of Newmans Air with a 50% share, along with NZ investment company Brierley Investments (27.5% shareholding). The remaining shares were kept by Newmans Group.
The resultant company was known as Bilmans Management Ltd, trading as Ansett Newmans.
Two new de Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 aircraft were ordered (ZK-NEY and ZK-NEZ) with a view to flying between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, with the first aircraft arriving in December 1986.
However, in 1987 Ansett purchased he remaining shares in the company and in in mid 1987 relaunched the airline as Ansett New Zealand.
Operations started in 1987 with 3 Boeing 737-100 aircraft between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
The ex Newmans Air Dash-7s were used on tourist routes Between Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch, Mount Cook and Queenstown.
The old and noisy Boeing 737 aircraft were replaced with new and quieter BAE-146 known as "Whisper Jets". Routes were extended to Dunedin and Invercargill. Also the old Dash-7s were replaced with the much more fuel efficient Dash-8. By the year 2000 the fleet had risen to 8 Bae-146s

Only 13 entries and only 4 days to go :(

This is not good enough we can't expect our sponsors to be donating prizes for so few entries.

I would like to thank those members who do participate and ask that they pass the word around and tell other members to get their act together and pick up the entry level if they want to save the monthly screenshot competition.

I do enjoy doing the monthly competition but I think it is unfair on the sponsors to be donating prizes if the competition doesn't pick up and get a few more entries each month.
