Personally, I judge a sim on how well it conveys the feeling of flight. For me, right now, XP has it hands down. What I mean by that, and I’ll use rotary flight just to highlight some points, do the things that I expect to happen in the real thing, happen in the sim. If I raise the collective, does the nose pitch up and yaw right? Do I loose translational lift coming back to the hover and does the aircraft want to fall out from under me? That’s what I judge a sim on. I was still flying Dodosim’s ancient Bell when I was using FSX because it simulated flight better than anything else despite thae fact that it was 10 years old and looked terrible compared to more recent addons. XP, due to it’s flight model, has rotary flight down pretty well and is getting better with ever update. Incidentally, with VR and helicopter controls, it would be possible to augment somebodys flight training with XP.... As for AF2, I haven’t used it, all I’ve got to go on is what other people have told me, that it looks pretty (and it does) but it has no substance. That’s why I asked the question. I’ve seen screenshots of the R22 and from what a prominant person in the FS world has told me, they’re working hard to get the flight model right. I really hope they do get it right.
I was watching a webcast recently about simming and it was brought up that we’re living in the golden age of flight simulation. FSX / P3D, XP11, AF2, DCS, Flight Gear and the numerous other combat sims...
